Why You Might Not Get That Traffic Fine

In most areas of North America, the fine for running a stop sign (from driving through to “almost” coming to an almost-complete stop) is somewhere around $100 to $250 when I searched a dozen provinces and states. Around here, the government raised that fine to $400 about a decade ago!

Around that time I had two seminars for municipalities where the Sheriff’s department was included in those attending. Yes, sometimes I have to wait a decade to use a powerful story in order not to embarrass people…

Three deputies at one, and two at another, came up to me after the seminar and shared that now they understood the reason they rarely issued stop sign tickets. All five were (are) Blue/Gold! All of them are in a great career that feeds both their first two Colors in getting to help people, make a difference in their community, while enforcing the law to protect their neighbors and to keep their city or town safe. Yes, stop sign violations are part of that – part of their job. But, without ever needing to discuss it with each other, their Blue intrinsically, intuitively and immediately decided that the amount of the fine (and demerit points) was beyond want they felt was just or reasonable.

They shared that they would pull people over, check for license and registration, and (as normal) ask if they knew what they were being stopped for. If there was any sign of remorse, regret or guilt, they would always let the person off with a warning. That’s the Blue intuition making the decision. However, all of them quickly shared or agreed that, if the person acted “stupid” as they called it (I pay your taxes – don’t you have something better to do – I DID stop – it’s not your job to try to trap me, etc. etc.), they had no problem writing the ticket. Unfortunately it was in a different city where a Blue relative was pulled over by a not-at-all Blue officer when he got a stop-sign ticket a couple of years ago…

Fast forward to last month when I was pulled over for…you guessed it…rolling through a stop sign two blocks from home. License and registration please…I’m going to let you go with a warning… That triggered the memory of the five Blue/Golds all those years ago. Now I have a copy of my Colorful Personalities book in my car all the time. I’m going to spot the officer again somewhere and gift him the book. My bet is that he’s also a Blue/Gold, but I was way too rattled to pay any attention at the time…
